Drifting your late morning stupor on an empty stomach, from France’s crepe and now Japan’s Katsu. That first crunch you get early in the morning is what your nostrils are craving for. Out of a sudden, things go quiet. A shrine tended with incense and offerings gives your lover goosebumps, while you force yourself to stay calm. Half-dried clothes loosely hanging on a clothesline, emitting a musty odour. Still can’t sniff where Back Alley Pasta is? It’s accessible from a back alley not far from central Jalan Ampang. Among the Top 20 restaurants in Malaysia 2023 at the Tatler Dining Awards, it has now turned pork-free. The founding chef has opened another restaurant and his usual suspects were crispy salmon, charred cauliflower and diavolo pesto. 8. If Only

It has a brunch and dinner menu. Since I’m on the brunch in KL tangent, and it’s already a well known brunch hotspot anyway, dinner shall wait! A menu jointly curated from the owner and the executive chef fills your late breakfast’s gut, has now expanded. Identifying as back-to-basics comfort pork-free cuisine provider, scrambled eggs here are treated with the highest level. Owner transports his produce directly from the orchard to cook it in-house. Common crowd pleaser are the salty, chewy izakaya classic, the grilled eihire (RM22) and the Cherry Valley duck spring roll (RM30). Opens at 7.00 AM to 11.00 PM. Closed on Monday. Price per person MYR 30 – 60.

9. Kafe Kleptokrat

A dose of Australian classic infused with the iconic Nasi Lemak resets your disarray and pixelated morning view into motion. Sourcing its coffee directly from the coffee capital of Melbourne, Victoria, signature Cottle Coffee refuse to let that red-colored buffalo canned drink cross the finish line uncontested. Opens daily from 11.00 AM to 10.00 PM, the price per person ranges from MYR 20 to 40, and the poolside seating looks pretty relaxing to me. (Pork Free, Alcohol Free)
Location: 16-22, Jalan Tun H S Lee, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur (Google Map)
10. LOKL

Swags are sliding from left to right, as if they’re bumping and grinding towards a rhythmic song. Sounds of birds chirping have long passed. The humidity has risen to a level of annoyance from last night’s hotel bed. Colombian Scrambled Eggs cooked with avocado (refer photo above taken from LOKL Meta) and intense cuppa coffee, proved my point for sunnier side of brunch in KL. Enjoy it with your loved one. Opens daily from 8.00 AM to 5.00 PM (extended hours on Sunday). Price per person ranges from MYR 20 to 40 (Pork Free, Alcohol Free).
Location: 30, Jalan Tun H S Lee, City Centre, 50100 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan (Google Map)
11. Bray Bakery

A bakery serving a sole purpose, empowering people in European bread making tradition, adapting artisanal sourdough to our local market so it’s affordable. I recently wrote an article about a bakery cafe that specializes in European style breads in Katong, Singapore. Brunch in KL kinda slays as hard too, you know. Don’t most of us do it on weekends, but extending it to weekdays like Mondays takes the blues away. Furthermore, Bray’s Eggs Benedict is touted as numero uno in town. It’s currently closed for renovation but if you ever take your loved one there, heads up price per person MYR 20 to 40 (Pork Free, Alcohol Free).
Location: #G-02, Menara See Hoy Chan, 374, 50400 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan (Google Map)
12. LaGula by The Hungry Tapir

I’m not sure where to put my finger…oh behave! I mean it’s part vegetarian/vegan restaurant, part bar. It got baked goods and all things sweet but based on my observation, scenesters go there not only for the booze, but for their live music and stand-up comedies too. Get it on and gobble the LaGula Whopper or the LaGula Big Brekkie in their brunch in KL menu. Opens from 11.00 AM to 10.00 PM (closed on Tuesday) and price per person from MYR 40 to 60.
Location: G-02, Ground Floor, Four Points Hotel by Sheraton, 2, Jalan Balai Polis, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan (Google Map)
